Artificial Hearts are Real,
Thanks to The University of Arizona
Bill Wohl has a new life thanks to decades of work by UA surgeons and scientists. Wohl was near death and spent nearly six months tethered to an artificial heart. He left with a new heart and now competes (and wins) international cycling events. Led by Jack Copeland, MD, co-director of the UA Sarver Heart Center, UA surgeons were the first in the world to use an artificial heart as a bridge to transplant. Then they were first to win approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for that same device. Now patients the world over benefit from this life-saving research.
